What is a Cash Memo / Cash Bill?
A Cash Memo is an invoice issued for a cash or counter sale – typically to walk-in retail customers. It’s a Tax Invoice that doesn’t require the buyer’s GSTIN because most retail buyers are unregistered consumers.
Is a Cash Memo legally a Tax Invoice?
Yes, under GST law. Under Rule 46 / 46A of the CGST Rules, a sale to an unregistered person must still be evidenced by a Tax Invoice, but with simpler details. Many businesses call this a Cash Memo, but it is legally a B2C Tax Invoice.
Do I need the buyer GSTIN on a Cash Memo?
Only if the buyer is GST-registered AND the invoice value exceeds Rs. 50,000. For typical retail customers, the buyer GSTIN field stays blank.
Can I issue a Cash Memo for online payments?
Yes. Use the ‘Mode of Payment: [UPI/Card]’ slot and fill in the transaction reference. The document name ‘Cash Memo’ is a convention, not a legal restriction.
